A maker of hybridization chip based diagnostic kits needed to assess the potential patent liability related to an entire chip design composed of several thousand probe sequences. Although this client already knows how to investigate sequence patent information, they estimated that doing so for an entire set of diagnostic chip probe sequences would consume approximately one year of full-time attention from an experienced staff scientist.
